Natural light or studio light?
We have a growing number of returning clients in the north west of England who choose us because of the quality of our work, outstanding customer service and sensible pricing. We aren’t the cheapest by a long way but most people recognise that you tend to get what you pay for. For corporate clients this is really important. With multiple people in a business, new people starting and longer term team members wanting updated headshots, a consistent style and consistent quality are really important for a corporate brand.
But should you choose natural light or studio light, a real location or a studio style location, indoors or outdoors? It depends on the brand, and the style the leaders of a business prefer. All have their advantages and disadvantages. Indoors, with a studio style background is the easiest if you need a very consistent look across multiple locations, possibly in different countries. This is especially important if those locations are in different countries.
This brings us nicely onto a recent project for Successfactory based in the beautiful village of Burwardsley, just south of Chester. Successfactory is a long established leadership training company and many of their training activities take place outdoors.
Natural light environmental headshots (sometimes called business portraits) were the obvious choice. One advantage was that the company has a single location and a fairly small and stable team. They have an outdoor ropes course and various other training aids which could be used as backdrops for headshots, as well as their buildings and signage. One advantage of real backgrounds was that we could hint at the high quality of the premises and facilities on offer.
Our approach to natural light environmental headshots is totally different to a studio style headshot session. Instead of working in a fixed location we can move about and use different features in the backgrounds of each person’s photos whilst maintaining a consistent style. Where there are different teams we can use a particular feature for each team.
Natural light headshot sessions take longer for each person being photographed and preparation is equally important, including choice of clothing, hair styling and professional makeup. Setting up and packing away after the shoot is much simpler and quicker though, so from a cost point of view there is light difference. One problem is cannot be avoided and must be considered is weather and the seasons. Natural light changes withe the seasons and the height of the sun and the amount of cloud cover. Too little can be as challenging as too much and if it’s raining there is nothing that we can do about it. However, with flexibility on timing we can usually work around the short term local forecast.
