How should you prepare for your headshot session?

You’re all booked, the session’s planned, and you’re ready to get your photos taken.

But…you’re not sure what comes next.

Being a little intimidated or confused about your headshot session is perfectly natural. Here are some common questions that our photographers regularly get asked. Starting with-

Is there anything I can do to get better results?

Yes! While we will do everything possible to secure the best possible pictures for your headshot, ensuring that you are well rested and hydrated for your session will ensure that you truly look your best. Aim to drink your daily recommended amount of water for a week before your session and try to get eight hours of sleep the night before your session. This will help us to capture you at your best.

What about my hair?

Ensuing that your hair is well cared for before your session is a fantastic way to optimise your look. Aim to boom in a session at least four to five days before your time with us. This can help provide the professional look you’re searching for and give you a little extra confidence for when it matters most. If you wear a wig or other hair appliance, feel free to bring as many options with you as you would like – we’ll always aim to give you the coverage that you need.

Is there anything I’ve overlooked?

No matter how much you plan, there’s always going to be one element that’s forgotten at the last minute. If you’re struggling to recall what you’ve missed, take a look at the list below-

Nails: While a headshot focuses above your shoulders, some poses may involve using your hands. Neatly trimmed or manicured nails can help open up the range of options available to you and help optimise your self-confidence.

Massage: A lot of clients book themselves in for a facial massage before holding a session or undergoing spa treatments. If this is the case for you, remember to allow for a least three days before attending your session to allow your skin to return to normal.

Specific Needs: If you have unique requirements for your session through personal preference or necessity, please do not hesitate to ask. We will always aim to accommodate client requests to the best of our ability and, where this is not possible, we will work with you to provide a solution or recommend another provider who can give the support you need.

Bringing some, if not all, of the following can also be helpful where appropriate-

– Toothbrush and toothpaste

– A selection of appropriate clothes

– A selection of accessories or jewellery to wear with your outfits

– A makeup bag with your personal colour palette or selection of products

What should I wear?

If you’re struggling to find the right outfit for your session, don’t tie yourself down. Feel free to bring a range of outfits with you and we will work with you to decide on the day and help you make the right first impression with your images. A good rule of thumb is to bring items that you would wear when meeting clients or aiming to make a great first impression.

What if something goes wrong?

Even the most extensively planned session can run into issues. If there are problems on our end, we will always alert you well in advance and do everything we can to hold your session at the closest possible date of convenience. We would also advise that you leave a little extra time for your travel when coming to meet us for your session to ensure that you arrive with us feeling fresh and rested. If you’re a little early, that’s ok too.

Is there anything I shouldn’t do?

Aside from stressing, you should be okay! One of the reasons individuals choose professional care is to ensure that they get the right coverage for their images. This involves expert guidance about composition, posing, and ensuring that you end up with the image you’re looking for at the end of the session. If there’s any element that you’re struggling with, we will do anything we can to respectfully guide you to get the best possible images. Spend your energy relaxing and bringing positivity to the session – leave the rest to us.

Can I ask advice before my session?

Absolutely. If you’re unsure about elements of your session, we welcome questions from our clients about their photos and your session. This can help us ensure that we capture the essence of your brand and meet your expectations. And if there’s any elements you’d like to adjust, we’d be more than happy to tailor your session to meet your needs.

What if I’m worried?

As counterproductive as this advice may seem, don’t be. We aim to make your time with us simple and stress free – we’ll do everything we can to help you feel confident and at ease to help secure the best pictures possible. After all, you may make it into our portfolio for other clients! If you’re stressed before your session, you can take as much time as you need to centre yourself. And if you’re worried about your appearance, remember that you’re in the hands of experts. We’ll look after you.

What about spots and blemishes?

Don’t worry, if you’re affected by rashes, spots or other unavoidable issues. A member of our team will be able to remove them when we are retouching your final images.

Can I ask questions during the session?

Of course. Our Just Headshots team will always aim to work with you to help put you at ease and ensure that your session is completed correctly and efficiently. If you are confused or unsure about any step of the process, feel free to speak out and we will do anything we clan to clarify or make things simpler for you.
